Listening

Hearing is a process of conceiving sounds via ears. 


LISTENING = HEARING + UNDERSTANDING what has been heard

According to M.V. Rodriques, " Listening is a process of receiving, interpreting and reacting to the messages received from the communication sender."

Elements of listening

Hearing 

Conceiving sound via ears.

Filtering  

Enables the listener to only listen to the most important and relevant information.

Interpreting 

Understand the sense of message heard.

Evaluating 

Conclude what has been said.

Responding

Replying back to the speaker.


Process of listening

The process and its every stage is completely related to each other. See how🤷‍♂️

1. Sensing/selection stage 

Realising surroundin sounds and then choosing relevant one to listen.

2. Interpreting stage 

Assigning meaning to the heard message or sound.

3. Evaluating stage 

Concluding what has been listened to.

4. Responding stage 

Replying or reacting to the message heard.

5. Remembering stage 

This is the last part, any part of message effectively listened to, is remembered by the listener.

Essentials of listening

Listen with patience 

Understand the emotions of speaker

Restatement and summarise 

Set aside proper time to discuss the concerned topics 

Get over negativity or minor mistakes made by the speaker.

Prevent from being pre-judged 

Avoid interrupting frequently 

Talk less, listen more 


Types of listening

Discriminative listening

Early age listening, when persons are in growing stage. Being a child, anyone can only listen and differentiate sounds but can't evaluate its meaning.

Comprehensive listening 

After being able to differentiate sounds, one evaluates its meaning. This is comprehensive / content / informative / full listening.

Active listening 

Listening with peer concentration and dedication.

Passive listening 

Not paying much attention or not completely involved in the conversation.

Biased listening 

Listen to only what one wants.

Appreciated listening 

This listening finds value in the sound they listen to and appreciate its content.

Evaluative listening 

Examining what is heard and also known as interpretative / judgemental / critical listening.

Sympathetic listening 

Being concerned about the speaker emotionally.

Empathetic listening 

To move far away from sympathy and, giving practical & logical solutions' to users problems.

Therapeutic listening 

A councelling intented listening in order to solve psychological issues of speaker.


Importance of listening

Respect 

A good listener is full of contentment which makes him/her respectful in the relevant fields.

Information gain 

A good listener always gains more than a bad listener in any communication.

Increased likability 

Everybody likes a person who listens to him/her with concern and concentration.

Better relationships 

It improves and nurtures relations as it creates better understanding between the persons connected to each other.

Greater clarity 

Good listening creates wider scope for evaluating what is heard.

No misunderstandings 

A good listener is always a better interpreter than a bad one.

Willingness of the speaker to get more opened-up 

Spraker becomes more comfortable while interacting with a person having effective listening skills.

Defuses conflicts 

A better understanding level is a defuser of conflicting arguements in any conversation.

Considerations of different point of views

A good listener considers speaker's point of view as well as puts his point with effective logics.
