Basic forms of communication

A) ON THE BASIS OF ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE

Communication forms necessary for communicating in an organisation are:

1. Formal communication

A kind of communication accomplished through a proper chain of commands & a pre defined path/channel of communication.

Formal communication is carried out keeping in mind the organisational hierarchy

CHARACTERISTICS of formal communication

1. Can be written or oral
2. Used in formal relations
3. Has a peescribed path/channel
4. Conveys organisational message
5. Requires sincere & deliberate efforts

TYPES of formal communication

1. Single chain
2. Wheel form
3. Circular form
4. Free flow

2. Provides clear & effective communication

2. Informal communication

A communication system which is beyond tha realm of formal communication is known as informal communication.

 It is also known as "GRAPEVINE".
This communication is the genuine need of people to communicate with others when they meet each other.

CHARACTERISTICS of informal communication 

1. Complements formal communication
2. Transmits information at faster rate 
3. Spreads false rumours 
4. Conveys sometimes destructive informations
5. Both written or oral
6. Less accurate/authentic

TYPES of informal communication

2. Gossip chain
3. Cluster chain
4. Probability chain

On this basis communication can be of the following types:

1. Vertical/ Inter-scalar communication

FLOW OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN 2 MANAGERS AT ●DIFFERENT● MANAGERIAL LEVELS

●Upward communication
(from subordinates to manager like suggestions, grievances, etc)

●Downward communication
(from manager to his/her subordinates like orders, instructions, etc)

2. Horizontal/ Lateral/ Intra-scalar communication 

When the communication takes place among managers at same level of different departments.

2. Conflicting
3. Time consuming
4. Lack of discipline

It is the horizontal information flow among the employees present at DIFFERENT LEVELS.

2. Most preferred method
3. Speedy communication
4. Better coordination
5. Enhances efficiency

Disadvantages

1. By passes vertical command chain
2. Threat to managers authority
3. Excludes superior
4. Harms superiors' dignity sometimes
